Raven Brooks is the director of finance and operations for Netroots Nation. Brooks got his start in politics by co-founding and leading BuyBlue.org, a revolutionary website that encouraged consumers to "vote with their wallets" by gaining crucial information about the internal ethics and political giving practices of popular companies. Brooks has a strong background in software development and design, management, business consulting, and project management. Fortune 100 companies and small start-ups have sought out his expertise. Uniquely able to wed his world views with practical know-how, Brooks has been featured in countless media outlets as a visionary entrepreneur. He lives in San Francisco, CA, with his wife and two cats and is an avid cyclist, hiker and outdoor enthusiast.
Gina Cooper is executive director of Netroots Nation. Often cited as a spokeswoman for online activists, Cooper has appeared on several national radio and television programs, including NPR's Morning Edition and CSpan's Washington Journal, and has been quoted in The New York Times and other major newspapers. Before her work with Netroots Nation, she was an early netroots activist and high school teacher in Memphis, TN. Karen Thomas Kolber is the development director for Netroots Nation. With more than a decade of fundraising experience, Kolber began her career in the health and human services arena, working at one of the largest Planned Parenthood affiliates in the country before founding the consulting firm FFD. She is recognized as an expert in her field, authoring the Democratic GAIN Fundraising Manual and teaching for the Brown-Tully Institute, EMILY’s List, National Women’s Political Caucus and the Sorenson Institute for Political Leadership at the University of Virginia. Residing in Virginia Beach with her dog Lucy, she is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and serves on the Board of Young Audiences, the largest arts-in-education organization in Virginia.
Josh Orton is political director for Netroots Nation. Previously, Orton served as executive producer for Air America's "The Majority Report" with Sam Seder and Janeane Garofalo, press secretary for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, and deputy new media director for the Barack Obama campaign. A Wisconsin native and current New York resident, Orton also blogs at MyDD.com. He believes that this is the Cubs' year.
Jon Pontificator is the strategic advisor for Netroots Nation. He advises on the development of the agenda and helps design new NN initiatives and projects. Pontificator has been blogging since 2002 and has followed the progressive blogosphere since it was in its infancy. He currently blogs at the Albany Project, where he focuses on New York State politics. When not blogging or working on Netroots Nation, Pontificator practices law at a private law firm. While he has previously lived in Baltimore, Washington D.C., Chicago, and Oakland, he now lives in New York City and doesn't plan to leave. After all, where else can you buy real estate for as little as $1,000 a square foot?
Mary Rickles is the director of marketing and media for Netroots Nation, where her primary responsibilities include brand management and media relations. She previously worked as marketing manager at the award-winning San Francisco magazine. Since her first job as a reporter, she has worked with agencies, non-profits and corporate companies on projects ranging from developing brand strategy to event production. Rickles grew up in Birmingham, AL, and now lives in San Francisco.
Nolan Treadway is the logistics director for Netroots Nation, where he works with the venue to ensure a smooth and successful convention. Treadway went from Daily Kos lurker to convention organizer in March 2005 when the call went out for people with experience planning conventions. Having spent four years in the San Francisco Bay Area working in convention sales, he had the right mix of experience and naïvety to help plan the first two conventions as a volunteer. Treadway was raised in Ann Arbor, MI, received his bachelor's degree in business from Michigan State University in 2001 and earned a Masters in Public Policy in May 2008 from the American University School of Public Affairs in Washington, DC.
