Some of the most exciting and competitive races of the 2008 election cycle feature some strong progressive candidates running in competitive districts. This panel will feature some of those challengers moderated by Brian Keeler.

Dan Seals

Dan Seals is running for Congress in Illinois' 10th district. A business consultant and lecturer at Northwestern University, Dan earned a master's degree in international economics from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and an M.B.A from the University of Chicago. When he made his first run for Congress in 2006, Dan built a strong grassroots organization with thousands of volunteers, raised almost $2 million, and earned 47% of the vote—all with little help from the national party. Dan's top priorities in Congress will be ending the war in Iraq, fighting for universal healthcare, and strengthening our economy.

Annette Taddeo

Democrat Annette Taddeo is a successful small business owner. She is Colombian-born and the daughter of an American war veteran. She overcame adversity, enduring 19 surgeries for a cleft lip. She knows how important it is for everyone to have affordable health insurance.

In Congress, she will work to set our country on a new course and achieve real fiscal responsibility. She will ensure that our economy works for everyone and will work towards energy independence and an end to the Iraq War. Taddeo will deliver on the promise of change and opportunity for all Americans.

Jim Himes

Jim Himes is the Democratic candidate for Congress in CT-04. A former Vice President at Goldman Sachs, for the last six years Jim has run the New York office of Enterprise Community Partners, an affordable housing non-profit, where he led the charge in building thousands of green affordable housing units throughout the Northeast. He's a former Chairman of the Greenwich Democratic Town Committee. Born in Latin America to American parents, Jim learned to speak Spanish fluently as a child. He and his wife Mary currently live in Cos Cob, CT with their two young daughters, Emma (8) and Linley (5)

Brian Keeler

Brian Keeler has a diverse, broad-based background in political activism, citizen journalism, Internet community development, business consulting and the performing arts. In 2006, Brian was a groundbreaking Netroots NYS Senate candidate with extensive online exposure. His campaign developed unique methods for utilizing the progressive on line community and was the first to hold a “blograiser,” a combined real-time and virtual fund-raising event. Brian is the co-founder of the blogs The Albany Project, Political Cortex and ePluribus Media.

Jill Derby

Derby is a candidate for Congress in Nevada’s Second District. Derby holds a Ph.D in Cultural Anthropology with a specialty in Middle Eastern Cultures from UC-Davis. From 1988-2005, she served as a Regent for the Nevada System of Higher Education. In 2006, she was the Democratic Nominee in NV-02, running a hotly contested race into the final weeks. The following year she was elected Chair of the Nevada State Democratic Party and led the state’s Democrats through the presidential caucuses. Derby was one of the first signers of The Responsible Plan to End the War in Iraq.
